This spotlight is on one of our awesome skaters from Team Zebra (Referees), Raven Mayhem. Off the track Raven spends a lot of time keeping our affairs in order, as VDL’s secretary.
How many years have you been skating?
I’ve been skating for nearly a year and a half now, since August 2012
How did you get involved in roller derby?
I had just met a new workmate, Denisse (you might know her as Gloria Sass) and we became friends instantly. She convinced me to come along to a freshie intake after I had just seen my first roller derby bout (as soon as I got my first taste of Derby, I was hooked). I was absolutely terrified that day!
What is your favourite referee position?
I really love all the referee positions, you get to experience all the different points of views of the game. Although, I am becoming quite partial to being Head Ref (I need a lot more practice on this one though).
What has been your best “lightbulb” moment?
It would have been when I was struggling to do power-slides, I found that by not putting all my weight on the front skate made it much easier to execute. And for that, I have to say a big thank you to Jillie and Bloody GoreJess for their help!
What was your favourite bout moment?
My favourite bout moment would have to be when I refereed my first bout. I was really freaking out at first, but after the first few jams, I just forgot all about the crowd and making the wrong call and just got into it. It was fantastic 🙂
How did you choose your derby name?
I was just writing down random word combinations and found one I really liked and was a bit goth.
What is one piece of advice you would give a freshie?
Lots of hot showers! It doesn’t matter if you are an absolute fitness freak or not, you are going to be SORE after the first few training sessions until your body gets used to it. Oh, and deep heat helps too.
Who are your derby heroes and why?
I would have to say my derby hero is Sintax, from S2D2. She’s so knowledgeable about the rules, is always happy to help people out and she’s so much fun to hang around. Sintax is, in my opinion, the epitome of Amazeballs!
