Fresh Meat Bootcamp begins this weekend! To celebrate, the Skater Spotlight is proud to feature 2013’s “Couldn’t do it without you” award winner, Trainer/Referee/Player (is there anything she can’t do?), the Mother of Freshies: Fangin’ It.
How many years have you been skating?
Since I could walk! I had the old strap-on ones with leather straps and metal buckles back in the day. I’ve been skating with VDL for two and a half years.
How did you get involved in roller derby?
I went along to see a friend skate at a CRDL game and loved it from the first whistle.
What is your favourite position?
Just being on skates, I am currently donning the stripes for Team Zebra.
What was your best “lightbulb” moment?
I have had far too many to count, but most of them involve bootcamps with Dirty Deborah Harry.
What was your favourite bout moment?
My favourite moment was not actually me playing at all. It was seeing all the skaters I had trained up as Freshies make their first team and play their first game.
How did you choose your derby name?
It took a while, was eventually given to me by my husband.
What skate set-up do you have/Do you have any gear recommendations?
Crazy DBX 5 Skates and Heartless Voodoo Wheels. I recommend trying as many skates and wheels as you can before you buy them.
What is one piece of advice you would give a freshie?
Relax and enjoy the ride, don’t try to rush learning something new.
Did you play sport before derby?
I did gymnastics, and was in a circus for years as well.
Who are your derby heroes and why?
Dirty Deborah Harry is my idol as far as training goes. So much of what I teach I learnt from her. However my derby heroes from day one have always been and will always be Terror-Smackdal and Red Hot Jillie Pepper, for soooooo many reasons.
